The University of Dayton sustainability office held an Earth Day event Monday, April 22, 2024, to protest single-use plastics. As part of this event, local artists created a bamboo "monster" that consumed plastic bags filled with plastic bottles. Students gathered at the amphitheater across from the student union and marched with the sculpture across the street and into the quad. This was a visiting artist collaboration conceived by artist/musician Michael Bashaw, choreographer Sharon Leahy, and songwriter/musician Rick Good, with input from UD staff and students. The project was sponsored by UD/Hanley Sustainability Institute, at the request of Bob Brecha, retiring director of sustainability programs. MARSHALL GORBY\STAFF
